  • 2016: First prize for Environmental Journalism by CORMAGDALENA / REVISTA SEMANA based on the article "Río Magdalena:Alma líquida, corazón de arena", featured on REVISTA INTELLECTA.

  • 2015: Medal Faith in the Cause, conferred by the Colombian Navy for special services during Colombia's First Scientific Antarctic Expedition.

  • 2013: The Cervantes Award is awarded through the Hispanic Advisory Board of Nova Southeastern University and the University Abraham S. Fischler School of Education.  Every year, each school board member presents the Cervantes Award during Hispanic Heritage Month to members in the community who make significant contributions to promoting excellence in the education of Hispanic Students.

  • 2013: Recognition from the School Board of Miami Dade.

  • Dec. 2012: Was included in the first group honored as 100 Colombians Living Abroad, by Colombian Government.

  • 2012: Was accepted to the first fellowship in high-energy Computational Astronomy at the HiPACC in the University of California at Santa Cruz, USA.

  • 2011: Recipient of the Antarctica Service Medal in recognition of valuable contributions to exploration and scientific achievement under the US Antarctic Program, given by the National Science Foundation.

  • 2011: Co-chair of the 21st Conference of the National Society of Environmental Journalists, SEJ in Miami 

  • 2011: Guest speaker at TEDxPura Vida, Costa Rica and TEDx JOVEN Pura Vida, Costa Rica (this last one devoted to inspiring the youth).

  • 2010: Was included in the first group honored as Miami’s 100 Latinos, to recognize inspirational and successful Latin Americans in Miami. 

  • 2010: Recipient of prize “PremioSacyr”, a brand new science journalism award in Spain directed by the highly respected science writer Eduard Punset.

  • 2009: Named co-director of the Logan Polar Program for Science Journalists, at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA, USA.

  • 2009: Juror at The Emmy International Awards, category: English language science documentary.

  • 2009 – 2010: Recipient of the Logan Polar Fellowship awarded by the Marine Biological Laboratory to spend one month doing research at Palmer Station on the Antarctic Peninsula.

  • 2009: Guest speaker at Aventura Espacial, Colombia. An educational/inspirational event that reunited 24,000 children over 3 days in Colombia to learn about astronomy and space. An event described by the United Nations as “one of a kind in the International Year of Astronomy”.

  • 2006: Recipient of the NSF Antarctic travel fellowship for journalists, to visit the South Pole. First Hispanic.

  • 2001: Space and Aeronautics Journalist of the Year, from the New England Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)

  • 2001: Knight Science Journalism Fellowship at MIT. First Hispanic in getting this fellowship.

  • Two Emmy nominations, for the Spanish language script of a series on Bolivia’s nature, aired in the Travel Channel in 1990, and for a biography of Christopher Columbus, aired in Telemundo in 1992

  • 1997: Recipient of the Fellowship for Science Writers by the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Ma, to attend classes ranging from cellular biology to environmental long term projects. The fellowship included a two-week trip to Alaska’s Arctic Tundra, north of the Brooks Range, to report on a study on global climate change.

  • 1995: First prize, enterprise and investigative journalism from the Society of Professional Journalists for a three-part series on Illegal Wildlife Trade at The Miami Herald
